hi my name is madeline franco and we are hereto discuss feeding your parrot. this is jasmine. she is a female eclectus parrot. she is ajuvenile and she is being taught to eat a wide variety of things. the basis of her dietis one of the prepared commercially prepared pelleted diets as well as a very fine seedmixture. often when birds are weaning which is to say they are going from being hand fedor parent fed to eating solid foods people use cheerios, many different types of cerealsas long as they don't contain a lot of sugars are good for teaching a weaning parent whatis good to eat because the cheerio has a little hole in the center and it is very easy forthem to grasp it with their beak. she also eats seeds and pistachios if they can getthem open. this is also a bird that eats a
fair amount of fruit. eclectus parrots likevegetables. they like rice, eggs, things like that. what i would suggest if you are tryingto have your bird become really healthy and strong and alert that you would introducethem to a variety of foods when they are young. the more they learn to eat when they are youngthe better they will be as far as balancing their diets when they are older. parrots arefun, it's fun to watch parrots eat because they use their feet as hands and they oftenhold things up to their mouth and it is very interesting the way they eat. they crack openlots of different things. my birds particularly like something that i make for them very oftenon sunday mornings i make them sweet potato french toast. the sweet potato contains vitamina and the french toast has egg and actually
multi grain bread and they eat every scrap.as you work with your birds you will find out what they like as favorites. a coupleof things though you should avoid are carbonated beverages, anything with caffeine, avocado, and a couple of other things that you want to have in moderation are things like cheeses.you don't want to feed them things with too much fat. like us them can become too heavyand obesity can lead to liver disease and things that are really not good for your bird, sluggishness. so have fun feeding your birds. they like a wide variety of things. it isnot uncommon to have, if you have a bird you'll find yourself buying a lot more vegetablesthan you used to and they'll enjoy eating what you eat and you'll probably enjoy eatingwhat they eat. another thing that i would
caution people about in feeding your birdsis lots of people feed their birds peanuts. i prefer to feed my birds roasted peanutsand i don't give them peanuts every day. the rule of thumb is i like to give my birds fouror five nuts in any given day. if you feed them too much of those things, of course nutsare very good for them, walnuts, peanuts and hazelnuts. they are all good for them butif you feed them too much of them they can get obese and peanuts especially if they arenot roasted could be harmful to your birds so my advice would be to steer more towardthe roasted nuts which my birds have gotten very used to.
